Akin to the pens I wrote about recently, time was spent taming the mustard bottles. Another talent, I modestly write to my dear and gentle readers about and not just the mustard bottles, but the whole fridge. This chore has been on the list for a while. We donned the rubber gloves, found the biodegradable cleaning solution, and away we went. The exhilaration, the hullabaloo, the excitement of it all.
Out ! came the insides of the fridge, including and discovering, several almost full bottles, of all the same kind of basic family style yellow mustard. Containerfuls of it, filling valuable real estate in the fridge, a whole shelf full. I did not purchase any of it. Most received from people moving out of their homes over the years, disposing of in my fridge. To come clean, I put my inheritance in the fridge and forgot about them all. (I seem to be doing that a lot and not just about mustard, but I digress.) Oh, it was impressive the amount of familial yellow condiment. I do not use it to be frank. Mom does when she comes for her yearly visit does. As the archaeological dig continued, on the fridge, convinced and thinking to myself, ALL do not need to go back in there. Gordon’s Scottish Presbyterian heritage screamed “they would all fit in a one” Others would have just thrown out the lot, this just occurring to moi as I scribble the diatribe.
The hazy bottle of olives I meant to garnish a sandwich with, or just plain consume were also disposed of. Jam jars rounded up like cattle at rodeo. The 19 bottles of jam were not put back in one vessel I will admit, finding that black current and strawberry should be held apart. And on it went, the stove top, pulled apart, parts of it went this way while others were scrubbed to a dirty black lather with steel wool impregnated with soap. Then bits and pieces were disposed of in the dishwasher. The hood lifted like a 1956 Chev, underneath the rings was attacked with vigor. The fridge is an engineering marvel, I had I have to say difficulty matching the shelf and the drawers. This is when a man would be handy, that and playing a game of checkers.
We were rolling and listening to a program on the patriot radio station, on a radio with a tape deck, of interest on the topic of prisoners, (I can relate, prisoner in my own home.) Rolling thru the microwave and anything at eye level. My dear and gentle readers, applaud the Sunny Sunday morning efforts of stove tops, Italian branded toaster oven, and the inside fridge that are bright and shinny clean.
If you are wondering what to do with ancient, out of date in color and fashion placements, heritage stock, just like the mistress of the house. Put fresh cotten clean mats in the drawers as they absorb water. Bonus they can be recycled on to the table with the food they are protecting from moisture. Next a step ladder out and do the tops of the cupboards, what excitement…. We may get the step ladder out and do the tops of the cupboards, what excitement…. “I have the body of an eighteen year old. I keep it in the fridge.” – Spike Milligan Moi and Miss LP.
